Shishigashira Japanese Maple
Shishigashira Japanese Maple - Spring 2019
We are honored to add this Shishigashira Japanese Maple to our collection at RAKUYO. This bonsai was created by Bob Laws and had its start as a young tree from Tsugawa Nursery in 1983. In 1990, Bob acquired a second shishigashira, and the following year in 1991 grafted both trees together to create one bonsai.
Shishigashira exhibited in the 1st US National Bonsai Exhibition
This maple won the deciduous Best-in-Show award at the Bonsai Society of Portland's yearly exhibit in 2008, was in the first US National Bonsai Exhibition in 2008, and was displayed at the Pacific Bonsai Museum in August 2013.
This tree was repotted into a box this year by Bob to help redevelop the left side after some dieback, an idea I fully support. I couldn't be more honored to be the next caretaker of this tree, and hope to dedicate the same amount of love and detail into it that Bob has for the past 36 years.
Thanks Bob for handing me the baton in this relay race called bonsai!
